Interesting survey in march by HSE construction inspectors.

Is there any sign of improvement within the sector?

Accidents / incidents will get worse as more foreign non English speaking persons carry out more and more work in this country.

There are no checks on, who they are, what they are competent to do,what experience they have, not even rigorous checks to ascertain if they are allowed to work in the UK

Only the really big sites now have any good supervision on them and only long established companies make any effort to sustain the level of health and safety cover they are providing at the moment

To be fair graeme the notices were issued to companies not individual workers. There are no trends showing significantly more non UK residents or "non English speaking persons" having fatal accidents.

This is probably another example of employers cutting corners on health and safety management.

As we all know health and safety people don't generate business for the employer ( unless yo act as a consultant ), and so the employer sees health and safety people as being an over head - an over head they would love to cut, but can't fortunately because of the management regs.

Rant Over !

Hi H, that's what I'm talking about it's not the large companies but the middle management companies who employ the subbies who in their turn employ foreign workers to cut costs, bang goes your H & S and quality control in one go.

Maybe IOSH members should now be recording the amount of persons on each site we visit and record the numbers of foreign nationals working on each site.

I bet if you checked / asked today, site agents would not be able to give you,
1. an accurate figure of how many persons were on site.
2. the number of those persons who were foreign workers.
3. conformation of who they actually worked for
