Posted By Jason Cox Help!! We fit replacement windows and as a precaution are shortly due to start taking samples of all soffits that are above the windows to be removed. The HSE have confirmed that this is a non licensed task. However I want to be sure we have a robust procedure and would like to have our sample collectors trained.(they have all already completed an UKATA accredited awareness course. I contacted ARCA who could only provide a 3 day course which is overkill and to lose 6 people for 3 days is a no go. If any body can offer me any further advice I would be most grateful.
Kind regards Coxy

Posted By Ron Hunter Not answering your question I know, but where it is determined that these soffits are ACM, does this then mean that those erecting the scaffold (presumably there will be scaffold for upper storey work) need to be licensed?

Posted By Jason Cox Hi Ron, Thanks for your response - it's a bit of a chicken / egg scenario - if soffits are identified as containing asbestos the removal operation for soffits (including access) is sub contracted out to a licensed contractor. Windows are then replaced by our teams (straight away if test shows there is no asbestos). The procedure for taking the initial sample is where I am struggling
Cheers

Posted By Chris L Without wishing to put in an advert for my ex-colleagues in consultancy, the fastest, most cost effective & safe way to get this done would be to ask a UKAS accredited lab to do it for you. They're trained, insured & can do the analysis as well.
What sort of scale are you talking about? Dozens or hundreds of houses?

Posted By Ron Hunter You could conceivably work to an entirely presumptive approach. I'm guessing you're not setting out to replace these soffits and your only concern is accidental damage during the window replacement?
