Posted By Derek J Golding Unfortunately the MOD is continuing their challenge because they know that the 40 years worth of backlog on their projects means that they will always find themselves failing in their duty of care for those on operations.

Posted By Lwood I for one am not convinced that it is 100% good news. I can only hope that our commanders and legal specialist hammer out a set of simple guides and do not leave local commanders to try and work it out.

Posted By justgossip If the this law is held up, then the forces will end up in a much poorer state.
As an ex squaddie, what a shame

Its about time. Our forces should get the best equipment available regardless of the cost. The risk will always be there and always be high so the best equipment (PPE) should Always be available. Along with the best training available. it is said we have the best trained army in the world imagine how good they would be with the best available equipment. Frank (ex 3RGJ)

Posted By Bob Shillabeer Slow down please. The battlefield is a dangerous place, there is someone over there trying to kill you, don't get much more dangerous than taht. Yes the army etc has a duty to equip troops with all that is needed to reduce the risk, I thought that was clear as it cost quite a bit of money to train and equip a soldier and get him to the battlefield and troops are in rather short supply. You can't pop alomg to the nearest shop and buy a replacement so the army does take the safety of troops seriously. However, please remember there is a position where safety should be managed as in a factory. Troops are not always fighting, there are times when they are in base and normal H&S precations need to be taken. In the case of the soldier who died from heat stroke that should be quite easy to overcome by proper kit and plenty of water, so if that is not provided then the troops are not equipped properly result poor performance and more deaths.

Posted By Phil Rose I am sort of with Bob on this. I spent many years in the RAF (don't hold that against me) serving all over the world including the 1990/91 Gulf war thingy, and many many more months in the middle east theatre. 'War' is a dangerous business and we undoubtedly ask all of our servicemen and women to do a truly unique job. The MOD are not infallible, they have certainly made their share of mistakes and there are plenty of examples where their procurement has been woefully poor or inadequate, and they are not always very forthcoming at admitting their mistakes. In saying that I don't think that they deliberately go out of their way not to provide the right kit. I have to say that the heatstroke case seems a rather odd one. We deployed to the middle east in very short time with a large detachment of men and I don't recall a single case of heatstroke. Why? Because we were getting good, sensible, solid advice from our medics, plenty water and resting in the shade when we could.

Posted By Bob Youel Look at your history books - its a known fact that our army has had poor kit [I was wearing kit in 1968n that was thrown away by our allies in the early 50's]for as long as its been an army - I know of lads that traded boots with the yanks in WW11 because our lads kit was very poor and look at the state of our most of our trenches compared to most of the German trenches in 1914/1918!
If you study history you will note that many of the great buildings of Athens were funded by taking away £ from the Greek army at a time of invasion!
The problem that we have is that too many of the people who make decisions have never had to get their knees brown and it is not going to change!
