Posted By Ucan Hi can anyone shed a little light in this for me..... Am I correct in saying that if you loose the original test certificate for a shackle does that shackle have to be strain tested again and a new test cert issued to it? Is no test certificate availabe/lost should the shackle still be used?

Posted By Neil R If you have no cert, how can you be sure/ prove that the equipment is tested and in date? Answer: you can't, you are also in danger of setting a precident with regards to certification and use. If the cert is lost then it requires a re-issue before equipment is used, if that means a re-testing then so be it.

Posted By Flic The lifting equipment should be clearly marked with an identification code and a safe working load. The ongoing requirement is then for periodic inspection (not testing) to ensure that its condition remains acceptable - not worn, bent, cracked etc. The key thing is to be able to tell whether it has been inspected within the required period. Posted By Ucan Flic, we are already carrying out thorough examinations etc, my question is do we need the original test certificate that came with the lifting item when it was first purchased?? If this is lost do we have to have the item strain tested again?

Posted By Dave Merchant You don't need to re-test. The cert allows you to define the SWL (which should be marked), so avoiding a proof test, but you already know the SWL, and your historical TE records prove you knew it for a while. In theory you should have a copy of the cert on file in case HSE wants to see it, but if it came with the item as new, just phone the supplier - they will probably have a copy they can send (especially if the item was batch-tested).

Posted By Flic I rate the chances of being able to find all the original documents for the 400+ items that I have as pretty slim! I wish it were otherwise, but since they continue to pass their inspections I have no intention of getting them tested again unless told otherwise. Flic

Posted By EI Bit surprised at some of the reponses so far. Ucan depending on the age of the lifting equipment/accessory, you should have received a declaration of conformity. Absolute duty under LOLER that this is kept for the life of the lifting equipment/accessory. Timescales for keeping TE records depend on the environment/industry/etc. If you do not have the declaration of conformity or a load test record, you simply can not confirm the rated capacity. If you can not do that, can you use it with confidence? Regards EI
