Posted By Emma Forbes IMO I would say a CIEH holder, possibly Nebosh (or equivelent) qualification and specialised experience or qualification in the subject matter. I train in vibration and noise (primarily) and hold the CIEH train the trainer, competency certs in nosie and vibration and the diploma and PgC in H&S.

Posted By Victoriana This quite a difficult question to answer because it depends on the subject matter. Competence is of course a mixture of qualifications, skills and experience - and for training this mix may change depending on the topic. For example, with a legal topic, qualifications may be important but with a practical topic (such as compressed gas cylinder handling)you may be more interested in the trainers background and experience. In terms of documentation a training provider is a contractor, so all the standard documentation applies, but I would also expect them to provide a course outline (to ensure they intend to meet your training objectives)and possibly feedback from other people they have provided training to (could be copies of feedback sheets or references). We have all experienced training where the individual leading it is obviously an expert in their field but awful at communicating the message in an entertaining and informative manner! Victoriana

Posted By DPK Mick I have said it before on this forum and will say it again, how about a teaching qualification. Subject knowledge does not make for a competent teacher as we are all aware. DPK

Posted By Stuff4blokes My local primary school has some good teachers but they would be absolutely rubbish at training a new employee how to oprate a lathe. Thus a teaching qualification is not the answer to competence in training.

Posted By Mick154 Know where you are coming from on this one Stuff4 DPK. Think i have found that the new level is the 7307, and has superseded these two (stand corrected if i am wrong) To put this into perspective We have had a training provider working for the company giving general training to our staff on HS topics, i was asked as we are undergoing review of systems what is the criteria for the training provider. So, after looking closely at this i have found that some providers as give the title of “Trainer” to their staff but on closer investigation they have some good experiences on general HS topics but have no formal training as a “Trainer” so our systems say that they must have some formal training certificate and that’s what i am researching, training to find which would give the most level of competence to train
