as a (confused) working electrician, 35 yers + experiance, having done the compex course 3 times over the years. I have the following question.

In a designated Zone "2" Area, there are two Ex "n" certified motors, all electrical equipment in the zone is also Ex certified, and marked corectly.
this has been in this state for over one and a half years, and has had regular maintenance & inspections.

recently one of the motors burned out.
it was replaced with a non Ex motor, (there was a assessment made under Dsear regulation 5).

my question is this, my Atex training tell me that the motor should be replaced with "the same or better Atex standard motor", so does the Dsear regulation over-rule Atex and my training. If it does then a lot of electricians need re training,

can anyone help?

It would appear that the revised risk assessment has determined the area non hazardous allowing the installation of standard equipment.

DSEAR implements in part EU Directive 99/92 with regard to assessment of potentially explosive atmospheres whereas Directive 94/9/EC relates to the design, manufacture and conformity of equipment intended for use within a potentially explosive atmosphere.

In essence
either

The original classification was erroneous

Process conditions have changed

The revised assessment is incorrect

The replacement has been made in error

Ask to see the revised risk assessment and updated EPD

thanks for the response, (sorry about the delay in responding)
only the new non Ex motor has been assessed,
and I was thought Dsear had to be in place by 2006,?

The equipment (motor) cannot be assessed in isolation

so you are saying it is the area (zone 2), not the motor should be assessed if the new motor is to be of a lower rating.ie: non Ex.?

The area has to be non hazardous to permit the installation of standard equipment

the now instaled non Ex motor was suplied in december 2008, so it must be outside the dsear regs deadline of 2003.
