Does anyone have experience/knowledge regarding US Health & Safety and the requirement for NRTL testing/approval for electrical goods. i.e. is this mandatory or is it a nice to have.
As a supplier, is it mandatory that electrical goods are tested to this standard, and as a purchaser in the US is it mandatory that I only purchase goods which have been suitably tested???
I'll spoken to several insurance companies and OSHA, with little success.

stevenb, I know that product safety laws are state laws, i.e. each state has its own distinct laws rather than a Federal approach, and they are all written on the basis of Strict Liability.
Cases (if they get to Court) are heard by juries who will also decide and award punitive damages if guilty, on top of any pain & suffering elements. Very expensive to get it wrong.
Best advice: if you are thinking about sending products to US take advice form a products law attorney in the state where you are supplying.

stuff4blokes, thanks for your comments. My understanding is that the OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH STANDARDS CFR PART1910 where electrical safety is covered is Federal Law, undoubtably this may be added to on a per state basis. I'm struggling with this one :(
