At what depth of excavation would "fixed" edge protection (including toe boards etc) be required rather than temporary plastic barriersor herras fence?

I would have thought this would be decided by Risk Assessment first but I have continually heard "2m" as a guide.

I thought the 2m rule had dissappeared with the WAH regs 2005

Any thoughts and suggested guidance?

Whether an excavation requires chapter 8 barriers or fixed protection will depend on the potential hazards of the excavation, including where the excavation is sited. The only '2m rule' that I am aware of is often used in utilities for deciding on whether the excavation walls are shored, which will depend on not just the depth but more importantly the stability of the excavation walls and all conditions. Chapter 8 barriers are used predominately to identify the excavation to the unwary as opposed to preventing people falling down the excavation. Obviously if it was a very deep excavation that could have the potential for a fatality if someone fell into it then something more robust than chapter 8 should be seriously considered.
