Hi, I've been asked to review a MSDS for Refractory Ceramic Fibre (RCF) Blankets. Our Workshop supervisor plans to use them in our Workshop to allow large beams to cool slowly after welding (prevents cracking of the welds).
My problem is the dust that might be released by the blankets, it is an irritant and potentially carcinogenic. The area is shared with other trades, we have local extraction units available and the doors are often open. But how much dust is likely to be released? They plan to unroll the blanket towards the end of the shift, place it on the beam, then leave it alone overnight to cool. It doesn't sound like this will create a lot of dust, but does anyone have any experience of working with these blankets?

Kay,
The first thing to say is that there are alternative products out there that are not RCF. I work in the thermal insulation industry and we haven`t used RCF for a number of years. The alternative products are MMMF but are as effective as RCF. We have used this material on steam raising plant and the like in the power industry. I also know that this replacement product is widely used in the heat treatment industry as well during NDT etc. It may be that your workshop supervisor is confusing the two products. If you are going to use the alternative product(s) you should easily obtain MSDS from any good insulation supplier, this in turn will enable you to carry out a COSHH assessment. The amount of dust generated would depend on a number of factors, e.g. how it is cut and/ or handled. If you want the name of a couple of reputable suppliers feel free to PM me.
