Intro first to be polite.
My name is Martin and I have just joined this forum after doing a few 1 and 3 day IoSH courses. However I wish to progress further down the health and safety route and see where I end up (poss with a degree) One area Icannot find an answer to is why Iosh instead of Nebosh or If you prefere it the other way round. Why Nebosh instead of Iosh. Please try not to be biased . But as I am intending to set off down this route I need to know its the right path. Thank you all in advance
Also if I have posted this in the wrong section can the moderator move it.
Also If it has been posted before please pass me the link as I did a quick search but nothing came up.
Thanks

Two different things - IOSH is the professional body for H&S professionals (although they do accredit some courses)
NEBOSH is an examining board for setting and marking the Certificate and Diploma which can then qualify you for various IOSH membership grades.
NEBOSH isn't the only route to IOSH membership - there is also the NVQ route.
Take a look at some of the threads in the study support forum.

Martin,
Just to clarify:
IOSH = Institution of Occupational Safety & Health
NEBOSH = National Examining Board of Occupational Safety & Health.
The latter is the exam board that sets and marks the papers that allow you to gain membership of the former.
Although as with all things, it's not that simple. For a summary of Membership Categories see this link:

Heather beat me to it.
In addition Martin, IOSH is not the only organisation for H&S pratitioners (IIRSM & CIEH spring to mind, each with different membership requirements).
But if you want to ask about them go to their websites and ask about membership - we could well be biased here.

Martin. I'm CMIOSH (a chartered member of IOSH) and I don't have a NEBOSH qualification, nor an NVQ, nor a degree. I have a Post Grad.
Just to demonstrate that there are many routes to IOSH membership.

With the fore going answers in mind and trying to divine the answer you're looking for, here goes:
IMHO as having done NEBOSH you'll need to be pernickity as the examiners to get thru' the exams (I stuffed it up on part A but flew thru' on parts B+C - twice). NVQ also completed and walked it. Probably due to having done NEBOSH, but also not having to sit an exam and work submitted is poked around, discussed and corrected where necessary before completing the next section. So from my experience do the course work then an NVQ and progress from there.

You also need experience to progress through the NEBOSH ranks.
I am an affiliate with IOSH and I have NEBOSH General and Fire and NVQ and H&S experience and many little construction courses under my belt, currently waiting on IOSH to make a decision whether I can progress to Tech IOSH. The experience part let me down last time I applied.
However I am AIIRSM :)
Good luck.
Emsie
