I am in discussions with how to set out the edge protection on a roof, we will be fitting composite panels that are 175mm thick and over hang the edge slightly (we will be using netting as the fall arrest protection)
I have requested a gap of 300mm prior to the build up at the base of the edge protection. 175mm from 300mm will leave me a gap of 125mm is this OK as the Main contractor only wants to give me 220mm as a max gap leaving very little room to manoeuvre composite panels. I have requested the hand rail be 1200 as if set at 950mm once the composite panels have been placed on the roof then the hand rail will need raising to meet regs of 950mm with 470mm intermediate rail. Any thoughts Alan

Edge protection and scaffolding are NOT (common error) the same. Alan, the standards are different - feel free to contact me directly and I’ll go through it with you.

Alan you need a triple guard rail on your roof, the guard rail must be tested in accordance with EN 13374 a minimum height of 1000mm above the finished roof.
If you install a triple rail 470mm from the eaves and then each successive rail at 470mm you should always have enough height of guard rail on completion of roof.
Also, when your guard rail returns around the verge you will have to take the measurement of your guard rail from below the purloin or from the rafter back otherwise you will have an excessive gap between the purloins
When installing your nets and the required overhang consider extending the net to the guardrail supports and bagging the nets if you need to.
