How about we seperate Health from Safety? I mean, have the particular specialists such as those who are ergonimists, occi health specialists, Ian Blenkharn and his ilk(really, no disrespect Ian, but there are not many of you guys), as health, as they have specific industry specific qualifications and experience. The rest of us, NEBOSHers, diploma holders, H&S degrees etc and experience in safety rather than health, be the other side of the coin.
I have always thought it strange that the field is so wide. It is not just that the world of work has such a lot of risks and hazards - rail, quarries, agriculture, construction through to DSE assessment etc - but that we are all lumped together. I know that there will always be crossover, and that to be say a lawyer could mean junior crime solicitor or senior human rights QC, but they share a commonality of beginnings and general early experience before specialising. My education and subsequent work within the field bears no resemblance to the aforesaid Ian, in fact it like describing totally different professions, as indeed it is. However, we are both under the generic H&S label as far as the review is concerned, with acknowledgements that we have different knowledge and experience to offer within this.
Is it just convenience that specialists in one field are lumped in with others within IOSH? And can the review adequately take this into account?
