Posted By Diane Warne Can anyone tell me whether a mixture that is 15% acetonitrile and 85% aqueous, is flammable? I have the MSDS and fire hazard info for acetonitrile itself but have not been able to find out the properties of the mixture. The users know about the toxicity hazard, toxic breakdown products and so on - they just need to know if this mixture is actually a fire hazard. Thanks Diane

Posted By Robert K Lewis Diane This is a difficult one without partial pressure tables. It may well be that at room temp and normal pressure there is insufficient vapour present above the liquid to support combustion and the mass of water is sufficient to prevent normal ignition. This does not mean that when exposed to a fire there will not be combustion products. The supplier is the first port of call, but if there is no "Flammable" label then one can presume that it does not support combustion per se. Bob

Posted By Keith Archer. Diane, Due to aqueous (water) quantity of 85% the substance would no longer be flammable. Hope this helps, Keith

Posted By Diane Warne Bob and Keith, Thanks for the replies. It's actually a waste mixture so no supplier info is available (these ones are always the trickiest.) Regards Diane
