I have an awkward member of staff who is not happy with his current role in relation to a H&S issue. Long story short (because it is not relevant to this post). He complained of a medical issue, I asked him to allow us to contact his doctor for confirmation of his diagnosis, he refused.
Anyway, he is now quoting various H&S rules at me that don't exist. I can combat them all except one. I am not CMIOSH registerered; I am starting towards my NVQ 5 later this year. I am employed as an "Health and Safety Officer". This was fully disclosed when I was hired (7 months ago), they felt tmy NEBOSH general certificate plus my 10 years experience was enough. This employee has said I need to have my "H&S number" posted for public display. To me this sounds nonsense, and I am not sure what number he is even referring to. I asked him to which he replied "I don't know, I was just told that you had to". I told him I wasn't CMIOSH registered, but he can have proof of my general certificate if he likes (probably more than I needed to divulge). So my question is, what number could he be talking about? Or is he just getting awful advice from somewhere?

Maybe they are referring to the Health & Safety Law Poster (at the bottom of the poster) -
Your health and safety representative:
Other health and safety contacts:
Just a guess.

Never be intimidated by someone spouting a supposed regulation - it is up to them to be implicitly clear what question they are asking, not for you to second guess. The closest most of have to an H&S number is our iosh membership but that has no regulatory standing. Plenty of threads on here that you don't need to be CMIOSH or on the OSHCR or even iosh to work in Health & Safety. I am with Phil John - likely miss-communication about the HSE contact number (from when they had regional offices) on the Health & Safety Law poster. Next time they get beligerent tell them to go ask the H&S Policy signatory for their number, after all they are ulitimately responsible for H&S at site.
