Looking for any pointers really. 

I'm a surveyor for an insurer and regularly use PPE on site visits. 

We also hold a central stock of safety footwear that we loan out to underwriters when they wish to come on a site visit with us. Problem is, these shoes probably get used less than 10 days per annum. When not in use they are stored in a dry locker. 

We've now had a couple of failures due to hydrolysis of the PU sole units. Causes the sole / heel to either crumble away or delaminate. No injuries to date mind. 

Anybody else had this issue with infrequently used footwear and found a solution?

Having worked for a large insurance company I am sure that only a relatively small number of underwriters tend to come out on visits and they should have their own safety footwear which is how is was managed in my day.  That way you avoided these issues.
