We have deliveries made on pallets. As a waste generator are we allowed to give the wood away once the delivery is unloaded. A former waste officer said this is not allowed and that it should be picked up by a licesed waste contractor

So you are "breaking" down palletised materials that results in you having wooden pallets - following the heirarchy of control the first question is why are your suppliers not taking these back for re-use? Failing that are there others in the area who could re-purpose the material e.g. pallet makers/refurbishers (previous location our pallet maker even collected broken pallets to fix - less labour and material than making from new - and put back in the supply chain). Are there others who can re-purpose e.g. local farmers for fences, duckboards etc. Only when you get to the end of the decision tree and the material is finally assigned as waste would you need a licenced waste contractor to remove it from site for appropriate disposal

Our ones are either given back to the supplier, sold to a business down the road who repurposes them, or when broken beyond repair, taken home by those that have wood burners (not sure if I should admit to that one).
