I have tried for several weeks to purchase a couple of air-fed respirator kits for use in paint spraying, but to no avail. What is worse is that a number of companies advertise the product as readily available on their website, but don't actually have it in stock for several weeks. One company promised my over the phone that it was in their warehouse. It was only when a PO was produced that they then admitted that it wasn't readily available. Any ideas?

Unfortunate side effect of "Just in Time" becoming "Just Too Late" especially when you aren't stood in a traditional bricks & mortar establishment - no one holds stock, very few manufacture and everyone else relies upon their distributor. Worse still a lot are now switching to draw demand - they only order from their supplier when they have a firm customer order in hand for slow moving product lines.
If you are after a specific model & brand have you tried the manufacturer to see who in their outbound supply chain has recently received stock?

Bear in mind that the new welding statement from HSE came out in February and there has been a huge push for air fed respirators as a result - I mean, epic proportions. As most basic air fed are the same whether they are linked up to welding stuff or paint stuff, you may find that this huge increase in demand has been under anticipated by the organisations selling this equipment which has left everyone short.
So, yes, there is a national shortage of air fed respirators.

I think you will find that there has been a deal of "panic buying" recently in the light of the recent change of enforcement policy by the HSE with regards to welding of mild steel. There is a shortage at present because every man and his dog want the kit - the producers of the equipment in question must be rubbing their hands in glee, it looks like they are the only winners in this scenario!!

The welders are the winners.
As well as being protected from fumes that cause lung cancer, they will also suffer less from other respiratory illness. COPD is also a killer.
