I'm struggling to find the definition of what is 'regular' when it comes to working nights. If night shifts (10-6) are not every week or even every month but sporadic (based on the demands of the business) - such as two weeks of nights during one month - is this classed as official night work? M/thx

Ditto in that no clear definition of regular night working, in your example you suggest 2 weeks in 4 being nights - at least for that period it would be regular, but if there were then 50 weeks of day shift it may change. I would probably look at the 17 /26 week period and see if there is a pattern and from that consider if it is regular. In the absence of a definition, at least we are seen to have tried to come up with an acceptable or rational definition for ourselves.

seems fairly straight forward really...working at least 3 hours between the period of 23.00 and 06.00hrs on a regular basis... we also use the shift risk index given in RR446 in addition to guide who does and who doesn't need it. In you example I would say on the face of it they do not fall in scope....however your risk assesment should show what activities and if fatigue can increase the risk.
