Hi All,

Does anyone know the regulations of the above and what the requirements are? My understanding is an annual tank and pump service.

Are you talking servicing from a safety point of view or some other e.g. trading standards accuracy for puming/tax reasons?

Are the storage tanks pressure vessels or just at ambient pressure?

If pressure vessels then they will require Statutory Inspections.

If not then you have a general duty under PUWER to maintain work equipment.

How big are the tanks? Do you come under the COMAH regs? I suspect not.

If just under PUWER, then you maintenance/servicing periods are probably indicated in the relevant design standards of the pumps/tanks.

ATEX standards give some guidance BS80079 series

I dont have a particular tank in mind. My client has a variety of tanks. I'm talking from a Health & Safety point of view. What is the client required to do from a statutory point of view and what are 'maintenance requirements'?

Sounds like either you or your client needs to go and buy the relevant technical standards. Not cheap.

If you don't have a particulat tank/pump in mind, then you can't reasonably expect someone to give a generic answer that will cover all tanks and pumps. No engineer worth his salt would do that.

Some things to think about include the existing/history of maintenance and servicing over recent years, What are the process conditions - temps/pressures etc, How are the pumps driven? Electrical, via a steam turbine, pneumatic. What types of pumps are they - centrifugal, piston pumps, gear pumps, diaphragm pumps. What are the fluids being pumped/stored? What are the materials of construction?

As well as the tanks/pumps - do you intend to include associated instruments (level / flow indicators etc) and valves in the servicing?

These factors will have a bearing on the maintenance/servicing requirements/considerations.

SOunds like you need more technical knowledge than you have to advise your client, if you are having to ask the question. Don't take that personally, just giving an opinion.

Its easy enough, as a safety adviser to tell a client you need to inspect/service the tanks and pumps, but you have to transfer that into practical advice. A little knowledge is dangerous.

I have the various technical standards that you probably require, but they are expensive - so you can't reasonably expect free (expensive) advice. Especially if you want a servicing and maintenance schedule developing from the information. This could be an extensive piece of work - from which you will make money from based on free information.

It depends on what substance you are storing in the tanks?
