Hello All

New to these forums, but already finding invaluable - thank you.

The MD is keen to do annual re-training; I have said that we need to make sure it is (1) engaging, but (2) that we have some record of understanding/engaging rather than just an attendance record.

He wants it to cover (and I agree mostly):

  • RAs
  • COSHH
  • PPE
  • Manul Handling
  • Fire
  • First Aid procedures
  • Accident/hazard reporting
  • Wellbeing
  • DSE (Office users)
  • Transport (FLTs)

We are a woodworking environment, that is medium risk.

Previously we have done powerpoints/verbal briefings etc.

What have you found in the past is a good way to deliver this kind of refresher? Ideally not too costly.

Thanks in anticipation.

As part of our training provision we use "Learn On Line" modules that employees can access via their computer at work or at home.

It's a good way to deliver some training quickly and easily (such as DSE, manual handling) but it's not suitable for all subject areas where practical refresher training would be more appropriate.

It depends on what type of training you wish to have and your budget

first aid refresher may be better from a professional,

fire training is that fire drills/evacuation or fire fighting.

Some training may just be a boardroom job and an understanding quiz at the end.

Many organisations provide a feedback (happy) sheet to help ascertain the impact of the training. Some include a questionnaire to see what has actually be learnt by participants. The choice is yours.

Why do you want to do retraining? Is it so that the MD can tick a box that says “Refresher training delivered”?

What you should be aiming for is competence, training is part of this but it also requires other things including experience and correct attitude.  If a person carries out an activity on a regular basis and they continue to follow what they were taught and demonstrate competence at the job they don’t really need refresher training, just proper supervision.  Refresher training makes sense for things like first aid which is something that most people rarely apply and it is easy to forget but for most activities refresher training is basically pointless.  If you have been trained to do something and have not actually done this task for years and need refresher training it begs the question why need the training in the first place.

Alternatively does the MD think that the level of competence is too low and you need to do something about it across the board? That’s not refresher training; that is starting from square one and trying to do it right this time.

There is an element of box-ticking from the MD.

The topics within tend not to be covered regularly, so it is more to remind people of them.

I think I will just do the best I can with the info etc. I've got. I think the MD has been once told that you must do annual re-training/refreshers and so that's why we're like this!

Firstly your training needs to be relevant and efficient. I do not believe that e learning will be appropriate in this situation. But it could be useful later on. Make sure you get a competent person to conduct the training if you do not know enough about the subject. innvolve group work, films, games and a sort of exam or quiz at the end to ensure that some lreaning has taken place. Above all. Make sure that it is enjoyable. And if it's going to cost money then so be it. Too many want this on the cheap just to tick a box. Best of luck

Are you in a position to offer a little 'critical friend' advice to your MD?

If so, really these topics can't be covered together, they are too disparate. As has been said, things like first aid would need to be done by an outside provision unless you have one in house, though you could have a 'First aid question of the week' sent out to your first aiders to remind them of good practice. The refresher needs only be every three years which makes it more affordable.  RA's I don't think should be done by anyone who is not competent and doing them regularly, and it should be more a CPD exercise for those people to stay up to date. (Though thinking about safety which is essentially a day to day risk assessment strategy could be kept fresh with toolbox talks.  PPE might be better as a campaign. Etc.

have done the best I can with the resources, support etc. so hopefully it will suffice!

Thanks for all the input/advice.

s 'awareness' training, that all these 'things' go on in the background.

Something strange went on with my last post!

Meant to say, I think this would be better classed as 'awareness' training, that all these 'things' exist and go on in the background!

E-Learning is 'only' awareness training and can potentially highlight the need for more detailed F2F training and fits the requirements for many businesses.

Happy to chat through your requirments and give an opinion.
