Hi everyone

The company has made a commitment to increase focus on mental health in the workplace. The company has a head office facility with 12 personnel, with the rest of the personnel being site based working on client locations, this could mean 2 people working under client supervision or 30 with a company Manager on site. We have a health and safety policy in place that includes mental health aswell as physical health. We have previously sent out a Toolbox Talk along with MHFA England booklets for information.

Any ideas of how we can achieve this? What does everyone else do? I am very limited on budget (pretty much none). We want to show personnel we are commited to improving mental health across the company but I also don't want to put in place things we can't maintain.

Thanks

Assign one person as the MH champion. Send them on a course. Carry out an innvestigation as to how many persons have been off sick with stress realted issues. Work out the cost of absenteeism. And put this to the board. You may increase your budget!

Agree with bigpub. Train that MH champion to be a mental health first aider. Also contact Mind as they often will come in and run awareness sessions. Use the local NHS services as well as again they often help. Might be worth contacting organisations of a similar size and researching what they offer in terms of MH support. MHFA England have some really good information on their website about the impact of MHFA in the workplace. Maybe do some anonymous market research in your organisation to find out if there are any work related stress triggers, or what the workforce feel the organisation could do to help with mental health. You may find that they provide a lot of ideas and answers.

Some useful information:

https://www.hse.gov.uk/stress/mental-health.htm

Awareness of Mental Health is still in it's early days and its a hard concept for people to understand (or even admit to). Whatever you do, don't push it too hard or you will just hit brick walls.
