Can someone clarify the safety requirements around string curtains in public places (ie. a coffee shop).
We have children in the coffee shop, there is no designated play area and I would expect parents to supervise their children. We have a set of string curtains (feature), which are installed behind a row of sofas. Behind the sofas is a walkway. You cannot walk through the string curtains (as the sofas block this).
My query relates to child safety. The string curtains are full length (start at ceiling) and finish just off the floor. They are not walk through as mentioned. The string curtains do not form a hazardous loop. If you apply weight on the strings the plastic clips holding up the curtain will probably break anyhow.
I have no manufactuers safety instructions, as the curtains are circa 7 years old.
I have a documened risk assessment (which also includes my staff intervening if children are seen to be playing with the curtains and warning signage in place (that they are not for playing with).
We had one incident recently, where the parents were not supervising their child and they received a string burn around the neck. This is the only incident we have had reported. Appreciate advice as to whether my business has done enough to ensure the safety of children (without removing the feature if possible)
Thanks.
