Hi everyone I am in the process of assessing some pushing and pulling manual handling tasks. I can't use the online MAC tool because it does not cover Pushing and Pulling. I've used the RAPP guide and I'm now ready to put the information into the scoring sheet. My question is there appear to be no guides regarding the totals at the bottom. I'm guessing that for the colour guide the colour that appears most dictates this? I suppose I'm asking should I be looking for score less than 9 to be low, between 10 and 18 medium, etc. Apologies if i'm making a meal out of this but I am confused.

I think the problem here is that people expect both The MAC and the RAPP tools to give an answer for the safety of the whole operation. Unless every aspect is green it does not do that. What they do is allow you to break the activity down into its componants and look at if anyone of the factors requires more action.

Hi Bibbin, I agree with Brian's point that your score is to help prioritise rather than discount improvement activity.
To assess pushing and pulling tasks I'd start with a thorough read through of the relevant section of guidance in the manual handling regs and then talk to the people doing the various tasks to correlate if what you think should be the most problematic bits is the same as their lived experience. The variables in how loads behave due to wheel types, floor surface, inclines, load types/distribution in cages etc., condition or state of repair of all of the above can make big differences in individual task components. As such it is absolutely essential to really understand the activity from the perspective of those at risk as these variations may be easily missed by a simple random observation.
In simple terms... The job is to ensure the manual handling hazards are adequately controlled and these tools are available to help you achieve that. If you start from the basis of the job is to populate the assessment and see what falls out it will likely feel a bit tiresome and unproductive.
Happy to have a chat on the subject if you pm me.
