Hi- Do i need an accident book? 

I am currently notified immediately  or a member of my team is, of any accidents and we record the accident with in what we call “ investigation form” This covers the accident, who was involved, treatment required, date occurred, where occurred, injured party, first aider- ( In effect a accident book). 

Then of course, eventually there is the additional accident investigation, root causes and corrective actions.

I don’t see the point in repeating the information, however we have been approached by union rep and has told us we must have an offical B1510 accident book. What are your opinions please

There is no legal requirement to have a B1510 Accident Book, however your internal accident form must have the same information in it as the HSE Accident Book, and must be Data Protection complient

Agree with O'Donnell - we (like many) use an online system. At one time you used to have to register such systems with HSE, but they got inundated so stopped. Just make sure as said below it covers the items in the B1510 book as these are a requirement of some old legislation (Social Securities Act/regulation of - never can remember the date but im sure someone will)

It is common that the Union Safety Representatives training has not advanced to consider changes in regulation over time.

The BL510 was the common format employed by most businesses without alternate methods of recording but the majority of larger or more computer savvy organisations have abandoned this paper system.

What has changed since the inception for the record for Social Security sickness payments is the introduction of two sets of data protection the last being in 2018 when the current publication was made available.

One thing many get wrong is that the injured party is NOT required to sign the record rather that the IP gives written consent that the record may be shared with Safety Representatives

I ( The company I was working for) was once contacted by the department of social security who wanted a copy of the BI510 form, for an ex-employee who was making a claim. This was around 15 years ago now though, so not sure they would still do such a thing.
