During one of our health and safety committee meetings a question was raised over wether there should be guidance for the use of PDAs by Fork Lift drivers. The answer was a unaminous yes, I'm asking the community if they know of any official guidance surrounding this as I was unable to find any. With absence of any offical guidance we will risk assess in the usual fashion, I'm guessing this is no different to the use of mobile phones in any vehicle.

If you treat a PDA on an FLT like a mobile phone you start to erode operational efficiency and impact maintenance schedules / costs. As the device is a picking aid you should try to avoid the scenario of parking brake on / engine off for each time the operator touches the device. What your committee should be doing is setting a team to investigate and report back remembering to get input from operators and managers.

We have production and warehouse operatives who's FLTs have screens and barcode scanners. You should be setting your own guidance that reflects your specific risks in your workplace. Essentially, it is common sense. Use of screen and scanner when stationary. The screens limit the visibility even more so and I have given inhouse training to pedestrians to make them aware to not assume a FLT operator can see them - they have to make their presence known. Low and behold, the sales team came up with a better way of communicating with pickers and production that meant they did not have to physically be in the hazardous zone where FLTs operate. This was my first success with staff and processes when I got the job.
