Hi,

The NEBOSH Diploma would feel like the next step, but it is a noticable step up and while it is often a requirement on job adverts you may find that it is too indepth for your current role or maynot?

Another consideration is going sideways and looking at a similar level the to certifcate but with more focus and that way tailor it to your current role?

or... maybe think about an environmental course to supplement the H&S, a lot of jobs and roles are Health, Safety and Environment (HSE or EHS).

It probably is too much for my current role however if may not be for future roles.

I think the fire one may be the next logical step because the sites i currently work on do pose fire risks.

Is there any Enviromental courses you could recomend?

The IEMA Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management is the one that I went for.  It's accredited and manageable and gives an introduction to sustainability issues.  IEMA is the environmental equivalent of IOSH and they accredit a variety of courses, some of which might be more suitable for you depending on your background, circumstances and ambitions, so it's worth looking at the descriptions on their website.

thanks 1 user thanked Kate for this useful post.

I think Kate's suggestion is well worth a look!

Hi Calj

First good luck with your NEBOSH Certificate exams early next year!

Good advice already given but if thinking upwards rather than sideways, then there are alternatives to the NEBOSH Diploma.

NEBOSH General Certificate is at Level 3 on the European Qualifications Framework and the next step up for many is Level 6.

So, the NEBOSH Diploma is at that Level but you might also consider e.g. an NVQ at same Level.

Any decision could be influenced to an extent by what learning style suits you but also what you do in terms of work (paid or not).

If you like sitting exams then perhaps the NEBOSH Diploma would be a logical step upwards, not least as you should already have some mastery of NEBOSH speak.

An NVQ offers an alternative approach. You put together a portfolio to demonstrate your understanding of the principles and how to implement them

If you have sufficient scope at work to take on a breadth of challenges, then most of an NVQ Level 6 portfolio could probably be made up using documentation that is produced during your working hours. [Might need some redaction of information that is personal, e.g. if you submit the results of an accident investigation].

Getting that breadth of challenges might need those managing you to give you opportunities to stretch and be prepared to supervise what you are doing and to rectify the mistakes you may make. So that to some extent is dependent on their management style - if they like to hold on to anything interesting, you might have a problem. However, if they are not prepared to give you these opportunities is your workplace where you want to be in 5 years' time?

Good luck whatever your decision on the way forward.

P
