Afternoon all, can anyone point me in the direction for any guidance/legislation on required vision levels for working on roofs.

I have a copy of the Advisory Committee for Roofsafety Black Book, but was wondering what other guidance is available.

Thanks.

Hi Steve - there is no legislation to call upon to give you clear guidance here.  This would be defined as a safety critical role and the only legislation that covers that is the general duty under the HSW.

There are standards in place for rail workers and for construction (Construction Better Health) when it comes to visual acuity, however it does depend on what the worker is required to do...and if they have any other issues such a colour blindness etc...

the routine visual acuity is aided (i.e. glasses or lenses) 6/12 in both eyes...There is a HSE RR floating about that summaries all of the recommendations, I will post the number when I find it...I hope this helps  :)

Steve,

Thanks for the reply.

The 6/12 vision is stated on the Black Book.

Anything else would be helpful.

In this instanceit is regarding working on a warehouse roof with roof lights.

HSE RR 584 covers the recommended standards.

Also there is a useful guide from Electrical Industry OHAG...which gives some unaided

Steve you can derive your own standard from that above...if you class the roof workers as safety critical...there would be a number of checks - visual acuity included - most OH providers use the CBH guide which for visual acuity states 6/9 in better or 6/12 in other eye.  Uncorrected acuity must at least be 3/60...
