We have a handful of bunds that are used for secondary containment for 1000 litre IBCs. I have concerns that when handling the IBCs and placing them onto one of our bunds with a FLT that there is very little clearance between each IBC.

The total length of the platform on one of the bunds is 2050mm and each IBC is 1000mm wide -- leaving just 50mm of clearance between the bunds. I'm concerned that this is not very safe and there is a higher risk of IBC-Fork collision when loading. We will be looking to ditch this bund for storing 2 IBCs at a time, but I couldn't find any HSE guidance or regulation regarding the clearance space between IBCs when handling with a FLT, hoping someone may be able to help or advise.

Thank you in advance for any tips or pointers

Cheers, P

IBC's are invartiably delivered by HGV loaded by FLT with no clearance between containers

Such commercially available bunds are often found butted together to form an IBC farm

- unless you have very poor FLT drivers I am struggling to follow your issue.

There isn't any specific legislation or guidance on the distance between IBCs the only thing you will be able to base this on is the fire loading of the area...HSL did a study a few years ago that looked at the fire performance of IBCs which may be helpful for you to include in your risk assessment of the activity...link below:
