Does anyone know of an electrical/mechanical device, to automaticly shut fire doors in the event of fire or fire drill.
I would appreciate any information on the subject.

There is a device made by Doorgaurd available on the market which is reasonably priced at around £80-00.
This closes the door automatically on alarm activation and is a small, discreet box which fits to the bottom of the door.
I don't have the contact no at present, but will get it to you soon.

Some have expressed reservations on the 'Doorguard' device due to protrusion, accessibility, durability of fixings, whether there is a sounder within effective range, etc. If it is really essential for self-closing fire-resisting doors to be held open, why not install the usual magnetic door holders activated electrically from the fire-alarm system?

Doorgard can be contacted on 01273 624054 or www.dorgard.com.
I've recommended this product for a couple of years and they work faultlessly.
Ken's point about ensuring that you have an alarm sounder is valid because without one they will not work!
Had teething problems with heavy doors over lino or tiles not being held back - scuff the area directly under the plunger with a piece of sandpaper.
Oh! and one other thing - have an annual wholesale battery replacement programme.
The main problem with wired in e/m fasteners is the cost. The Estates Dept in my Trust have been quoted between £800-£1000 per pair of doors.

I have looked at doorguard and have no operational qualms about using them however, does any one know how much the replacement batteries cost? So that I can cost the operational cost of using these.
