Can anyone tell what the recommended procedure is for checking emergency showers, ie how frequently should they be checked and when checking, how long must you let the shower run for. In accordance with L8 (ACoP for Control of Legionella) Emergency Showers should be checked 6 monthly. Surely it must be more frequently than this.
Thanks

Hi Katie
There are two issue that you are examining regarding the shower checks.
The L8 guidance only relates to the examination of shower heads on a 6 monthly basis in respect to the legionella bacterium, and again this depends upon your risk assessment i.e the water temperature, is the shower trace heated, supplied with warm water etc. If it is cold water then the risk of legionalla bactia being present is minimised.
If warm water is present the heads must be cleaned and examined at the 6 monthly intervals.
The emergency shower inspection is again down to the risk assessment. Why are they there, what is the frequency of the task that requires emergency showers to be provided. However good practice is to check these at least weekly - the aim being to ensure they still work, the flow of water is sufficient, the operating mechanism works i.e hand operated or foot plate and the shower is not obstructed etc.
Hope this is of use.
