Posted By peter gotch This is an update on previous postings. Thanks to readers for the substantial interest we have received in various vacancies, which has helped us fill various positions. However, we are having difficulty in filling the most important position that we have advertised in the forum and through other media. I notice that there has been a recent upsurge in interest and presume that this reflects that the holiday season is coming to an end. Perhaps those of you who are now looking to your career development will now express interest in taking over responsibility for managing the provision of health and safety advice and training for our most important client, ie ourselves. Corporate Health and Safety Adviser The post holder will take over the top priority function of heading up the delivery of health and safety advisory services to our internal client, reporting to our Chief Executive. Our clear preference is for our Corporate Adviser to be based at our Glasgow Head Office, but we would consider Manchester, Wakefield, Reading or Croydon as possible alternate locations. You are likely to have at least 3 years’ H&S experience and to be at least TechSP (pref MIOSH) status, possibly with H&S as a second career. However, your management and influencing skills are arguably more important than your H&S expertise. H&S development/training will be provided for the right candidate. Experience of implementing the role(s) of various CDM duty holders would be a distinct advantage but is not essential. As you would imagine a consultancy with over 100 years experience of construction has a vast wealth of CDM expertise. As the only adviser dedicated full time to our internal client, you will be expected to procure adequate H&S advisory services from our H&S business unit (and other appropriate resources within the Group or outside). This would include managing the input of 3-4 full time equivalent H&S Advisers with various levels of experience, qualifications and expertise. You will procure advice and training for and our staff and manage the investment we are making in the development of the next generation of advisers through NVQs etc. You will also be responsible for ongoing development of our health and safety management systems and supporting guidance. You will help us towards our goal of being “best in class” with commitment led by our Chairman and Chief Executive. You can input into the development of our environmental management systems, and the ongoing debate as to how far we should go in integrating management systems. You will have the opportunity to get involved in work of almost unparalleled diversity, eg 1. Advising our divers, abseilers, nuclear density gauge users and materials laboratory staff 2. Decontamination of licensed nuclear sites and contaminated land 3. Enforcing New Roads and Street Works Act and other legislation 4. Design and procurement of major highways, bridges, railway, water and sewage, marine structures, and visitor attraction schemes (eg Pepsi Max Big One, London Eye) 5. Buildings and building services projects including at hospitals, educational establishments, prisons etc 6. Planning supervision including high profile projects such as the redevelopment of Hampden Park, Lowry Centre, Manchester Airport second runway. We do not expect you to know everything there is to know about the full range of hazards and risks that are associated with such a wide range of projects!! You will have access to 18 other H&S professionals (including 11 corporate members of IOSH), together with the multi-disciplinary resources that a 3000 strong technical and management international consultancy can offer, including Babtie Training, environmental specialists, a UKAS accredited asbestos laboratory etc. In the longer term, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the advice and training we provide for other clients, but in the short term Babtie’s own needs will keep you busy! If you are interested in this position, please send your CV to me preferably by email to peter.gotch@babtie.com or by post to Babtie Group Ltd., 95 Bothwell Street, Glasgow G2 7HX If you have already responded to our recent ads in the press or my previous postings on this forum, there is no need to reapply. Regards, Peter
