Posted By Mark Bywater Don't get hung up on job titles, as long as you are paid well enough and you are doing a worthwhile job that adds value to your organisation, what does it matter if you are called a cleaner (no disrespect to cleaners intended) or an MD. Chasing titles is just something to brag to the neighbours / friends / relatives about - forget it. Oh by the way, what company car do you want, a Mercedes or a Maestro? Please - get a life.

Posted By Sean Fraser Reasonable question, Allan - the difference is whatever the employer sees it as. I hold a title of Advisor and not manager and definitely not officer - that was deliberate as I saw my role as being there to advise the company on H&S matters - I don't "manage" personnel and I am not an officer as I don't go around doing inspections or such like. The term officer is officious and creates barriers unnecessarily, so it seems to be on the way out. But I agree that the title is often incidental and often irrelevant. Make it whatever you want. But it can sometimes be an indicator of seniority and authority so don't be too dismissive of it either! As for company cars, I wish I'd just taken the money now - the tax is a pain and simply not worth the effort.

Posted By harry charles shaw when i first started in h&s i regarded myself as an "officer"new to the job, not enough experience etc,but i always felt that the title officer sounded a bit regimental however several years down the line i regard myself as a manager not because i wanted to upgrade myself just the simple fact that i see my role as managing safety whether it be personnel, audits, accident investigations the whole shooting match, its managing safety. however on the other side of the coin iam now looking for work(any offers out there, construction)and felt i missed out on interveiws when i described myself as a manager "my client is looking for an h&s officer, you know someone who will be hands on " ! so now im an officer and proud of it
