I have posed the question to IOSH can I become TECH SP without a Diploma Pt 1 qualification ? the answer was "NO" Now I am disapointed at this response as I have been a Health & Safety Advisor for 5 yrs in a corporate multinational chemical company and now a Health & Safety Consultant for a PLC company(And kept up to date My CPD for 3 Yrs (but still cannot obtain Tech SP status..)It seems like even if you worked for NASA as a Health & Safety advisor but do not hold a NEBOSH Diploma qualification you still cannot gain Tech SP status... Is this fair?
Comments..

Posted By David Pike I would agree that in some circumstances this can appear unfair and perhaps unwarranted, but like all institutions or even golf clubs for that matter there are constititutions, policies and procedural rules that if have to be followed if you wish to join or attain a certain level of membership.
I honestly believe the intent is a sincere one that looks to blend vocational/experiential qualities with an academic measure of understanding in a structured method that allows an individual to start their career as a novice and progress along a defined route to the level that they desire or require.
Perhaps, given your voluntary CPD and practical experience you should consider taking the NVQ route?
I do empathise with your position as undoubdtedly everyone else who has had to travel up through the ranks will.
Good luck in the coming months and years.
Dave

Posted By Dave Wilson You dont actually say what qualifications in the H&S field you have mate. Not saying this is you but you can set yourself up as a H&S consultant with no h&s qualifications at all!
You can also work for anyone employed as a H&S advisor as long as your employer feels that you are 'competent' to do so.
Pt1 NEBOSH is only one route to Tech Sp status there are a few others.
The problem you have is, I assume, that you do not fulfill the criteria required for this grade which is quite clear, so Do you feel that you fulfil this critera? If not why do you think that you should get Tech Sp status?

Posted By Calogero Gattuso Thanks for your response Dave W in reponse to your question. I have a NEBOSH Certificate, And am a competant noise & Manual handling assessor, A competant Occpational Hygenist, a qualified Electronics Engineer as well as serving as a foundation governor at a local school advising on H&S. And the person who trained me as a H & S advisor in my last role has a BSC Degree, MSC,MIOSH,And has a NEBOSH Diploma Pt 2 as well as 16 yrs experience.
I think taking all that into account I am competant.

Without trying to dampen your enthusiasm I would like to challenge your view of "competence" through some questions. Please be assurred that my aim is to either strengthen your position or at least identify potential gaps (which might be IOSH's point) to enable you to go forward one way or another.
My concern is that whilst you have a significant amount of structured experience and on-the-job training you don't demonstrate the certified training to support it.
You say that you have NEBOSH Certificate, what other training qualifications do you have? - either safety or technical. Remember "competence" is a suitable mix of training and experience. To fill the apparent gap:
"A competant Occpational Hygenist" - beyond the Cert. what other certificated training do you have in the area of Occupational Hygiene?
"a qualified Electronics Engineer" - again what certified training?
"serving as a foundation governor and mentoring by a BSC Degree, MSC,MIOSH,And has a NEBOSH Diploma Pt 2 as well as 16 yrs experience" - Whilst these add value to experience they have to be balanced against structured, certified training to give a roundness to "competence".
If you wish to e-mail me direct rather than posting here I would be happy to give constructive comment.
Best wishes Bill

Posted By Peter Lee I think that in July when the new bylaws come into force you can enter TechIOSH with a NEBOSH Certificate and 5 years experience.
Contact the membership department you my be pleasantly surprised.

Posted By cameron It is all very well going on about degrees and Diplomas, however in my experience a lot of people who have degrees etc certainly have the brain power and ability to recall information but absolutely not a lot of common sense! Experience should count for a lot more. (What is the most dangerous thing in the World? - An Officer with a Map!!

Posted By Caroline Ross Calogero,
I to have a NEBOSH Certificate which I thought would get my TechSp status but it turns out, that it was my NVQ 3 which got me there. Why don't you go down this line?

Posted By Iain Downie Calogero Just one question I meant to ask you before you left - why did you choose to be called Paul?
This is going to sound harsh and I dont mean it to; but thats life mate. NEBOSH have stated the requirement for that level of membership and at present you don't meet the requirements. Had your circumstance not changed you would be on your way to MIOSH now.
My only advice is:
Do your NVQ or Dip and get your Tech SP status. You are more than 'competent' to achieve either qualification. Then continue until you reach full membership.
Best wishes & good luck Paul

Posted By Dave Wilson Calogero,
Sorry to put the dampers on this mate, but looking at what 'qulifications' you have, at present you do not, I believe, have the requisite qualifications necessary for this grade.
Just because a learned H&S chappie taught you and is your metor etc this counts for nothing buddy.
There are loads of people out there who have completed what I would call bit part H&S training which is quite specific for a specific need its the 'overall' domain knowledge which is required. The leap form Cert to Dip 1 is a big one and the grades reflect that.
I do agree that there are intellectual people out there with loads of letters after their name who are not good 'hands on people' however they have leaped through the academic hoop, thats probably why you need experience and CPD so that you can prove experience and qulification to progress up the grade structure within IOSH, its the same for tech sp and gradIOSH etc.
