Posted By Steven I have been made redundant in food manufactoring and wish to move into the H&S sector. I have IOSH 'Managing Safely' and have been able to get a grant to complete NEBOSH General Certificate. I have been the H&S Officer at my present employer for 2 years and would like advice on what will be the next step. I would be very grateful for anyones input Steve

Posted By Paul Parry Finish your certificate and then use your experience and work towards an NVQ4 in H & S. Doing the NEBOSH Diploma is a waste of time and money, just log onto the many NEBOSH disgruntled websites. If you want to do the diploma route do the Safety Council one as they dont insist on you conforming ie you can use your own words in the exam not having to write NEBOSH speak word for word from memory.

Posted By David A Jones Do you have contact with any other safety professionals in your area? If so, try utilising their knowledge to assist you as a mentor. If you can get the funding I would recommend a postgraduate diploma or the NEBOSH diploma as your next qualification step rather than the NVQ route. In my opinion the NVQ route does little more than demonstrate that you have the necessary experience - which when applying for jobs can be done through your CV. I know from my experience of recruiting persons for teams I've managed that I'm looking for both qualification (by examination) and experience. The level of qualifiaction and experience being required being dependant on the particular role.

Posted By J Knight Hi Steven, Before considering the British Safety Council Diploma bear in mind that it will not fulfill the academic requirement for membership of IOSH. The NEBOSH Diploma is tricky, and in some respects deeply irritating, but you will learn stuff and it is universally recognised as indicating a high level of knowledge. You may be interested to know that the majority of new entrants to IOSH are now university graduates, rather than Diploma holders; it might be that you would benefit from looking at say a distance learning MSc or BSc, John
