Posted By Rowan Swinhoe I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on how to go about pursuing a career in health and safety. I am currently working as a research scientist and am also safety officer for a group of research laboratories and hold the NEBOSH general certificate and a BSc in Environmental Sciences. I would like to work in health and safety consultancy eventually and would be grateful for advice from employers or others who have pursued similar career paths. Many thanks.

Posted By Thomas Kennedy Rob You'll find loads of people have posted similar questions here before. I'm sure if you have a good trawl through the postings you find loads of approcahes and ideas. First step do a strengths/weaknesses analysis of your H&S skills and experience. Although you may want to get out the laboratory, I think this could be your best route to the H&S market place. (Mine was via my environment background). Target the work sectors you know. I''m sure your knowlege of laboratory practices (good and bad), expertise on COSHH etc. would make you well placed for positions that retain labs as part of their service. The environment agencies, water authorities, colleges and universities all spring to mind. I'd also register with a few job agencies - if they like you, they'll sell you round the blocks. It worked for me. Also show you're trying big time - be as flexible with a work location as you can. Lastly keep in touch with "what's new" so you're on the ball. Get along to as many short courses, seminers and meetings as you can to network. Best of luck. Tommy
