Posted By Aine Hi, I'm 23 & have just recently started in a post which will allow me hands on experience in the Health & Safety sector, I have no previous experience or qualification. I want to pursue a career in this field so the NEBOSH General Certificate is the qualification I need. As I will be financing myself, I have to opt for distance learning for the cheaper option. Is this achieveable??

Posted By DM2005 Hi Aine, I recently completed the NEBOSH Cert and managed a credit pass, I did this as an evening class 2 nights a week and it cost approx £500. Don't know if this is cheaper or more expensive than what you expect to pay but I reckon I could have easily passed if I'd done it by distance learning. The important thing to pass is to stay on top of the course at all times and do plenty of revision for the 2weeks running up to the exam. I used 'Introduction to Health & Safety at Work' by Hughes & Ferrett and found it much more useful than the course notes and lectures. I think it costs about £50. So if your feeling brave you could just pay the exam fees and book price and forget about wasting £500 on the course. It all depends on how much guidance you reckon you'll need. Dan

Posted By David J Jones I did mine by self funded distance learning. Provided you set your mind to it and discipline yourself to putting in sufficient hours each week there is no reason why you should not achieve the pass. I would advise that you purchase (from NEBOSH) past exam papers with examiners comments as these are a goldmine of information. Go for it, I actually found myself enjoying going back to "learning" (I'm a tad(!) over 50) so age is no barrier. You should be more than o.k. at 23! David
