Hi, I'm after some advice on whether it it is preferable to undertake the NEBOSH diploma or an MSc in Occupational Health and Safety. WHich would employers prefer these days? Many thanks.

I don't think you can really compare the two. Obviously a masters will outrank NEBOSH. As you already have a degree (otherwise you wouldn't be considering the masters) then you could also do a post grad diploma in OHS.

I would have said Nebosh with MIOSH would be what most employers would know, if however you have MSc then I would suggest that an employer would be suitably impressed with either, my point being if you check out the latter half of SHP you will see numerous references to Nebosh & MIOSH, both outweigh any adverts stipulating a University background.

Rowan,
There is no single answer to your question, as it depends which area of SHE you wish to go into.
Employers requiring a first degree in an engineering discipline would, on the whole (there are always exceptions) prefer the MSc or MPhil.
There are also issues regarding where you wish to work, the Post-grad title being world-wide easily quantifiable by those employers with little or no knowlege of Safety, but are probably themselves MBA or similar qualified.
That said, in the hallowed Jobs pages of SHP, which I feel is a superb indicator of current UK employer preference, the Diploma route remains the preference..
The recent Salary Survey results show Postgrad trained workers as Head & shoulders above when it comes to green-backed drinking vouchers, however I think the same people are likely to be those with engineering first degrees and also in Oil.....

Clear as mud to me.

Personally I think that if you want to go into management then a masters or a post-grad will always be preferable. NEBOSH is a base line for health and safety qualifications (no offence). And by the way I don't have a science degree even though I have a PGdipOHS.Work experience can also not be ignored. Qualifications are important but work experience is essential.

I beg to differ. I simply believe that most employers now recognise that an MSc has greater scope than an OH&S Diploma.
I took the NEBOSH Diploma route and since then I have undertaken an MSc (in Environmental Management). I personally don’t use the designatory letters Dip OH&S.
An MSc is recognised outside our professional boundaries and if your career does move you outside OH&S, you can still use the MSc designatory letters.
With the changes in membership this month, there should now be a shift away from job adverts requesting NEBOSH Diploma Holders to Chartered Safety Practitioners and Grad IOSH.

I think that we have our wires crossed. I don't have a NEBOSH Diploma, I have a post graduate diploma, which is higher (you don't need a degree to have NEBOSH but you do to get a post grad diploma). I agree that an MSc is the most preferable option (that's what I said in my first post! I am currently looking at upgrading to a MSc)). What I was saying was that the person who posted the thread might want to consider doing a post grad diploma as a mid way between NEBOSH and an MSc. Less time, less money etc etc.

I apologise, I have indeed got my wires crossed and I didn’t see that ‘I was pushing at an open door’!
I agree most OH&S MSc courses do have a Diploma aspect to them.
The message that I was trying to put over is that all IOSH accredited courses meeting the academic requirements of Grad IOSH (Usually OH&S Diplomas) should be seen by all potential employers as having equal status, however if an MSc is an option, then I would always recommend that to the candidate.
