Having comlpeted the National General Certificate I am now looking to make the next step. I am interested in your opinions as to whether the Diploma or the NVQ is the best option and why?
I look forward to hearing your responses.

Congratulations on achieving your NEBOSH Certificate. I'd love to be able to give you a definitive answer to the Dip v NVQ question, but in short, I don't think there is one. I have achieved both a diploma AND the NVQ4.

In short, my humble opinion would be that you follow the Diploma route first. My reasoning? Simple really. NVQ4 is a scheme that looks at you actually doing the job and if you are just starting out in health and safety, it is highly unlikely that you will be in a position to fulfil the requirements of the NVQ route. I am sure that a lot of people follow the NVQ route because they think it offers an 'easy ride' into IOSH membership...well it don't! I found mine a struggle in places.

Hope this helps

Vicki,
You have been given some very sound advice from Jerry, it is worth taking the time to survey what is available before taking the plunge. Also bear in mind that there are a number of universities which offer health and safety courses, these are listed in 'about membership'.
This route in fact now accounts for the largest number of people undertaking higher level qualifications in OSH(over 50%)so is clearly worth consideration.
It is always worth talking to someone who has undertaken a course before deciding, your local IOSH branch may be able to assist here. Each branch has a Branch Education Development Adviser (BEDA) have a chat with him or her.

Was just about to make a post on this topic when I spotted this.

I have an NVQ 3 in Occupational Health & Safety and have just sat my NEBOSH General Certificate (hope I pass). Assuming I do pass I want to go on further.
I really do struggle with exams and found my NVQ much easier than the recent NEBOSH exams.

I work in a community care organisation in a role as health and safety manager and will continue to so for the foreseeable future however, I don’t know which why to go next.
Do I go for my level 4 NVQ or do I go for a Dip? I think I would rather do the NVQ but I am unsure what future employers might favour, NVQ or Dip. What’s your thoughts?

Many thanks for the advice given. I think I am erring on the side of the diploma rather than NVQ at this stage, as looking through recent job advertisments most specifically ask for Diploma rather than the NVQ. Also being releavtively new to the safety side I would feel more confident with the learned knowledge behind me to then expand on this through expericence.
Any opinions or thoughts gratefully received.

I went down the NVQ4 route. As I have said on many occasions "it is not how you get to MIOSH it is the fact that you have got there. At the end of the day it is the quality of service and advice you produce that matters.

I am always dismayed when pople say you should go for this route or that route. I agree that the diploma route is ok for some people but the NVQ route will suit others. It is very much down to the person and without looking at both options you won't know which one suits you best. Don't be led by the nose to either and anyone who says that one or the other is easier don't believe them they are as hard as each other.

If I had my time again I would still use the NVQ route it took a long time but it was one of the most rewarding things I have done.

We as an Institute should be going out and telling employeers and agencies that there is no difference.

Having got CMIOSH from both academic and NVQ routes, I am just posting an article summarising my feelings on a brand new way of achieving NVQs, and why it helps. This can be found on the study support forum.
