Posted By paul I have been employed by Nissan motor manufacturing for seven years, my current role is in the inspection area. I also operate the role of safety rep within the zone, i have recently completed my NEBOSH general cert and i am now working towards the professional diploma in health safety and enviromental management which i hope to have completed by August 2006. I am eager to become a full time health and safety advisor, if anybody has any suggestions on what path i should try and take i would very much appreciate it.
Thanks Paul

Posted By George Wedgwood Paul, a lot depends on your skills and what you can offer a potential employer. To make this step, you probably need some help in marketing yourself and some friendly guidance on what employers mostly want from a new technician or graduate practitioner. Companies like mine always consider people like you as your people skills and industrial skills usually enhance your scope in a diverse environment - the 'safety bit' and qualifications only suffice to tell us you have reached a certain development stage and are capable of learning - a 'must' for good practitioners. One thing I always look for is evidence of 'extra mural' activities such as voluntary work, constructive hobbies and (any) committee work that shows you don't like working in a narrow field and like working with people.
To discuss and get a feel for all of this you could try a recruitment agency and see what they have to offer, even though you may not be quite ready for that move. There are a number of them that advertise in the SHP Mag. Attending a Branch or SG event or meeting is also a good way to meet possible mentors who will guide you further - you always need someone to help! The other approach is to craft a good CV that sells you as a desirable employee and try it out with a few job advertisers - getting experience of interviews is essential and it costs little!
Regards, George
