Posted By RobStone Hi Guys IT engineer who Lives within Sussex in the South-East and currently Studying for the NEBOSH Cert. Did stop for a bit as I got the idea no jobs in H&S when you just have a certificate. My other avenue was Project Management but not sure which to do. Is this the case? or would I be able to find a job down with the cert, and move onto the Diploma while in a position. Have a catch 22 situation where im on £22 at the moment but want to move to H&S but not sure if its viable Many Thanks Rob

Posted By peter gotch Rob, There is a chronic mismatch between supply and demand for H&S professionals in the South East at present, particularly if you are prepared to commute to the Big Smoke. You should be able to find a trainee or assistant position, e.g. in a local authority that still retains a sizeable H&S Department. Good luck. Seasons greetings, Peter

Posted By Alexander Falconer Rob It certainly is the old catch 22 situ, I found myself in the same situation around 10 years ago (albiet a QA Engineer) earning a pittance with a small local company and becoming very disillusioned. Once I attempted and passed the NEBOSH Cert, developing some procedures & getting some H&S experience under my belt - found it was time to move onwards to broaden the experience within different sectors - best move I ever did. Just remember to make sure if employers provide you with training & qualifications, make sure they get something back (this can be listed as your achievements), I gained various accreditations to ISO 9000, 14000 & OHSAS 18000 as well as several major safety & environmental awards - all whilst holding my certificate (as well as gaining several management and environmental qualifications too). Now, in my first Senior Management position, good salary almost triple what I earned all these years ago, and a company car - life could not be better. Show's what you can achieve with determination & a desire to work hard. Maybe one day I will finally promise myself to attempt the diploma! My advice would be to go for it, sometimes you need to take a step back to move forwards. The rewards are not always visible in the beginning, but they become apparent as time goes by. Good luck in whatever you choose to do Alex PS just holding a certificate has never hindered my search for H&S employment at all, employers are interested, as long as you can back your experiences with achievements!
