Hi,
I'm currently seeking work as an Health & Safety Assistant within the East Anglia Area.
I've just completed the NEBOSH General National Certificate in December and awaiting the result. I have 2 years experience as a HSEQ Administator for a Offshore company.
I am able to forward my CV onto any interested parties.
It will be greatly appreciated for any leads that may be thrown in my direction.

Goog luck in the search Louise, i was in a similar situation 6 months ago where i was made redundant and have moved into H&S. I am now in a full time H&S position after 6 months of searching and knock backs. There didn't seem to be many positions come up in East Anglia when i was looking but keep looking as something will turn eventually. send me your e-mail and if i hear of anything i will let you know.

Your best bet would be to have a look at a number of Employment Agencies. Have a look at http://www.safetynews.co.uk/employment.htm there are a few listed on there or www.totaljobs.com and search under East Anglia.
Failing that, use the employment section in SHP.
Good luck with the agencies as they are more than often a law into themselves.

Hi Louise,
I have just got a role as an HSE Administrator but I got NEBOSH in 2003 when I worked in insurance! I had the cert but no experience so found it hard to get into H&S. You are lucky that you were already involved in it when you sat the Cert!
Why not pester your employer for you to take on more duties other then admin side/shadow the Safety Manager/Advisor. Sorry if you are already doing these things! In my new role my manager (HSE Manager for Scottish Region) had no one for several months and her role has widened to include compliance and other things. As a result she wants to train me in certain areas so I am competent to do them if she is away etc and because she wants to develop me further to go beyond the Administrator role. She doesn't have an H&S Advisor or Assistant so I guess my role has or will have, elements of a junior advisor/assistant role. Try your own company in addition to others. When I worked in a large insurance/risk management co I tried many avenues to get into H&S or risk management but sadly to no avail but gave it a try anyway.
I wish you all the best and hope you are successful with the transition from admin to practical H&S in an advisory/assistant role.
Good luck!

It is not easy breaking into h&s and only through perseverance and perhaps a little bit of luck will it happen.
I note you have 'off shore' experience, presumably oil and gas. This will be both an advantage and disadvantage. The trick is to turn it to your advantage. Learn as much as you can about the processes and hazards because in time you will be sought after, rest assured. Meanwhile, consider improving your qualifications in both health and safety and oil and gas and use your employer if you can, if not, consider it an investment.
I currently work for a large utilities, construction and rail organisation but specialise in rail safety. I found it difficult to break into h&s even with a MSc degree in h&s (personally funded) due to lack of full-time experience. However, I took a chance and left my reasonably well paid and secure job to work for a high profile organisation and then I was offered a better role with my current employer, at the grand old age of 47!
So, much to think about, but time is on your side. Good luck for the future and and keep your eye your goals.

HI,
I was wondering if anyone can help. I am a Risk Management Student in Glasgow, I am looking to work in Health and Safety, however every time I have applied for a graduate job I am told I should have a NEBOSH certificate. Does anyone know of any companies in Glasgow that would take on a graduate in Risk Management and put them through the NEBOSH diploma? and how long does it take to do if I was to do it after I graduate?

Hi
I noticed one of your responses said that working in oil and gas could be a disadvantage, i don't understand how any experience could be a disadvantage.

Perhaps 'disadvantage' was not quite the right word. You are right, experience and knowledge is all important. However, the point I was implying is that offshore is a narrow and specialist field. Hence you either concentrate in that particular area, or, broaden your scope to include other industries and hazards. The latter is probably the more difficult option, at least, in the short term.

Put like that I would have to agree with you i have worked onshore and offshore for 30 something years in construction and heavy engineering and when offshore it is a whole lot easier.Personally i find the safety culture is a lot better.

Hi,
I forget to mention in my first message that I am currently unemployed, I left work in June, so that I could study for the NEBOSH Cert.
I would like to stay in the offshore industry, as I found it very interesting and varied, but if a Job was offered in another industry than I would take it.
Thanks
Louise

I also meant to say that companies would benefit from the experience and knowledge that louise has gained so far because of the offshore aspect, If I where an employer needing someone I would certainly be interested
