Posted By AlB Holding a Diploma is slightly more than entry levele qualification. I am looking for a position in North West (Liverpool/ Manchester area) but I have experience and aptitude and would fear that this position does not offer the salary I would be looking for. What is the salary range for this position?

Posted By Alexander Falconer Like AIB states, you may struggle to gain a Diploma qualified candidate applying for an entry level position. Looking at the various recruitment ads & safety & health practitioner, Diploma required positions are usually commensurate with a salary £27K and upwards (average is around the £35K). Entry level positions are normally around the £15 - 20K circa (depending on the area) You might be better going for someone who has recently gained a Certificate Qualification, and maybe offer the Diploma Training as part of the package - this would be a tasty offer in many eyes. Regards

Posted By Jasonjg I have sent CV direct. Can we please remember that there are some of us whom may have got a lot of general rough and ready backgrounds to draw experience from however we would still need the relevant experience within the management side of H&S regardless of qualification level. If the posting required six years experience and diploma then that would be a different case all together but it does not and thus one must conclude that they are prepared to allow compromise. I hope to finish dip 2 this year but I am not crazy about the idea that I should then be claiming a huge salary without a good couple of years experience related to the role. That thinking could get me into trouble one day.

Posted By Christopher Kelly You can get into trouble anyway whatever the salary! In fact in my experience those firms offering a lower salary are more likely to get you into trouble - the reason being they don't want anyone who knows what they're talking about which will cause them a problem. I worked for someone who ignored my repeated advice (over a number of years) had an accident, pleaded guilty in court (so all the evidence didn't come out in the papers) and put the blame on all their employees including me. If the MD / owner had paid attention to my advice the accident wouldn't have happened. To this day, after a serious prosecution he still hasn't spent £400 on a personnel cage and, it turns out he had a similar accident involving serious injury 10 years before. Since working for them I make sure I get the best salary on offer. Also when I go for an interview I interview them! If they don't like having a survey of their works and a grilling about their attitude I forget them. It works - earlier this year when looking for a job I was offered a number within a short space of time - all the job offers were from respectable, h&s conscious firms. A number of others I went for got annoyed when grilled about their risks and control measures. I identified 3 firms I refused to work for using this method during interview and a larger number over the phone. If they offer a small salary it's a good bet they are not interested in safety - forget them and build up your experience elsewhere. Do some contract work -give them your report, walk out the door and if they don't take your advice then it's their problem. A consultancy will charge them the earth and tie them in knots with a contract.

Posted By Alexander Falconer Reviwing christophers comments, seem to feel a sense of deja vu here. Unfortunately, I agree with this concept, most companies seem to see safety as an added cost, and will try to keep a tight rein on the purse strings (including salaries). Having experienced this concept, I moved onwards from 3 different companies, guess what, years after my departure, each one has been prosecuted - some people will still not learn. Don't get me wrong, this can also sow the seeds for gaining experience in communicating and dealing with higher level management. At the end of the day you can only advise. You are in control of your own destiny and salaries (take it from me as one whose salary has almost tripled in 10 years) A
