Posted By alan2603 You may think I am completely barmy, however my wife controls the money in my house she is an accountant. I am trying to get her to let me join IOSH as a member but trying to justify it to her is quite difficult (like extracting teeth) because I don’t know that much. Can the experts please help?

Posted By Charley Farley-Trelawney What criteria do you offer? Is it enough for automatic membership or do you refer to it on a generic basis, either way, get her to say yes; I know there is always the argument of: Do I IOSH or not? I would have to say a resounding YES, but then again I am biased! Best of; box of chocs and some flowers followed up by candles round the bath should do it, not to mention chartered status should see your current income increase, it’s the latter comment that usually does the trick! 'Break a leg' (NOT) Stay safe! CFT

Posted By Frank Hallett Alan We visited this topic at some length a few moontha ago - it should be still there if you do a search using almost the identical title of your posting. Basically, it comes down to you having to decide what value ANY membership of ANY organisation may have to YOUR business. For instance, if, as appears, you may be an independant, then the value of relevant trade bodies [like IOSH] will have a different value to someone who is permanently employed. On a personal note, for a majority of clients, membership of a suitable [that's well recognised and perceived by the client as credible] trade organisation [in this case IOSH] has, on balance, enhanced my business. Your business RA may take you in a different direction though - you must decide. Frank Hallett

Posted By snt I think some employers and education institutions (private and public) are not aware of IOSH. If your route to qualification is through other means than NEBOSH you have some explanations to do to get a job. IOSH should insist on professional denoting their membeship status. In accounting, there are so many professional bodies like ACCA, CIPFA, CIMA, AAT etc. Jobs are not given on the basis of your academic status alone, but your membership status like Chatered, part qualified, level 2 or level 3.
