hi
i passed the NEBOSH cert in 1997, and was H&S advisor for 2 and a half yrs. i then took a career break to have my 2 children etc, now i have been back in H&S has a coordinator for nearly a year, which is boring and i reckon a monkey could do it :)
anyway id like some advice on where and how i would be able to further my career in the H&S field. i am pondering whether to go for the NEBOSH Diploma, but it costs a lot of money and quite frankly the company i work for won't contribute to it.
is the diploma the best way forward or has anyone else got any ideas?
any advice would be helpful
regards,
sam x

Hi Samantha
Have you considered NVQ Levels 4 and 6.
Your employer may fork out for them via organisations such as the British Safety Council.
Best Regards Mark

Is it the way that all companies don't want to shell out for H&S training for their advisors. I'm finding it difficult to get any kind of career development started, even though I'm eligible for government funding of 80% of or upto £1000. Nothing near the £4-5,000 needed though. in fact I still haven't got a contract of employment for the firm i'm with, and I've been with them since November, no matter how many times I ask the Operations Director

It depends,
certain coordinator positions/ replace Manager...
I have recently come across one company ad... that wanted a 'safety advisor' with typing skills of up to 60 per minute or some thing along that line.

Hi ya Sam
If you end forking out for further eductation yourself, you may be able to claim it back in tax relief. You need to phone your tax office - yours I believe is in Leeds but personnel should have info if not ring HQ and ask them. Expalin to the tax office you are in H&S want to further your education and the course is relevant to your work and they should advise you what to do next. I believe personnel/Line Manager have to write them a letter saying that you are doing XYZ and it costs £?!@ and it is relevant to your work. Albeit not where you are now and where you may stay but that is irrelevant.
Good luck with that.
