Posted By CC I am looking to get into the gas/oil industry, I am set to complete my diploma in august and have six years experience mainly in the rail industry in a health and safety role. Can anyone give me any pointers of where to start(how to gain the experience) I have tried applyingto different companies but to no avail. I would like to work abroad eventually but realise I need the experience to get me there. All advice greatly appreciated.

Posted By PST CC You need to prove to other employers and agencies (bless em) that you have worked in a high-risk industry (which you have) and that you have a proven track record (pardon the pun). Oil and gas employers look for no-nonsense straight talking people who have ability to deal with high-risk areas on a daily basis. A lot of oil and gas companies have either agencies or service providers who find people for specific projects. You need to network through agencies at first then further this network once you get in. Start looking at contractors to the oil and gas industry especially this time of year with shutdowns etc many are looking for 2/3/4 week duration safety officers. Good Luck PST

Posted By Descarte Show them that you have a keen interest and in depth knowledge on the areas which will be of upmost importance to them at the moment, this would obviously include COMAH, DSEAR, ATEX etc... I always tailor my CV to suit the position, no not making things up to suit the job, but adding things that I know or have done in the past pertanent to the job / industry type. And obviously reading up on these topics before going for an interview can make the difference between looking like you know what you are talking about in an interview and looking like you know nothing.
