Posted By jackie Trying to land that health & safety position IS like looking for the Holy Grail. I'm reposting this yet again due to 'time wasting' recruitment agencies. You know who you are so PLEASE do not contact me for my CV. I have GradOSH status, degree in Environmental Health, post grad qualification in safety, health & environmental management. Experience = 15 months in Local Authority (covering H&S, Food Safety, Pollution, Housing fitness) & 10 months NHS (risk management). Looking for perm/contract consultancy work in the South Wales or Midlands area. Relocation to Wales not a problem, immediate start possible. Will consider Junior consultancy position. Again i stress - NO MORE AGENCIES!

Posted By The toecap Unfortunately, all the agencies want to do is build up their database of bodies. Its like the SHP magazine. Full of angency vacancy dribble. Keep plugging away. Tou only fail when you give up. Best of luck

Posted By Anthony Kelly The changes to the Forum certainly seem to have generated a lot of comment, unsurprisingly. Though not quite a lone voice, having been successful working through agencies in the past (naming no names, to avoid advertising them) they can be very helpful. It would be a real mistake to rely purely on agencies, in the same way that you shouldn't only rely on this forum, networking, any of the safety journals or other media. They each have a role to play. It's wrong to make comments like "all agencies are......" just because of a bad experience with certain agencies. Much the same as Mr Clarkson saying " all health and safety people are......" and I remember the outcry last time he made a comment.

Posted By Mike Miller Hi jackie first off I am sorry but I am not offering employment. I am however agreeing with you on your frustration with agencies on this forum. In over 3 years of 'THEM ASKING'for my CV, not one has ever had the decency to reply, let alone offer employment. Now well established in a national construction company due to all my own efforts and not an agency in site. Local agencies on your own door step are far more likely to place you in temp, employment if not permenant. They tend to work harder to find good candidates and treat them well when they do. I AM SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE! Unlike those who just want to surf websites like this one and phish for candidates. Nice work if you can get it? Mail me if you wish and I will put you in touch with a good organisation that is always seeking people with your level of qualifiacations & experience. Good luck and whenever the next agency asks you to submit a CV, just flip the page and read on....! unless you have nothing better to do with your time that is.

Posted By garyh I would advise keeping your CV sharp and up to date (consider paying for professional rewrite). How you present yourself has a massive impact....and that CV is usually the first contact. Don't sell yourself short. Why not e-mail it to agencies? It only takes a minute. However, don't expect much from them and you won't be dissapointed.........I agree that local agencies are better.

Posted By Brian Rudge As someone who has a fair amount of experience on both sides of the interview table (i.e. I'm getting old!)can I offer a little advice. Agencies are not there to serve you, they are paid by the recruiting company; as Anthony pointed out, don't rely on them, use as many avenues as are available. CV's are not to get you a job, they are to get you an interview. A general CV is necessary but is a fairly blunt instrument, if you are using a CV for a specific job you should tailor it to that job, (No, don't tell lies) emphasise relevant experience, and don't dwell on the irrelevant. Most good employers will be working to a specification, ask for it if it's not provided and use it.

Posted By John Caboche In defence of Agencies..... I have obtained my last 2 permanent health and safety roles through agencies after redundancy, In their defence, there are some good and some bad out there, I have come accross both, In my experience, generally the smaller the agency, the better service you receive as a candidate, I'm not going to post names, but the agencies that have been really helpful to me know who they are..... Steve, Sean, Adam and Gavin. Thanks guys, you were brilliant, as for the others, well I can't even remember the consultant's names I spoke to them so infrequently..... But there are some very good agencies out there in my experience. As well as some very bad ones.... John Caboche

Posted By Simon Walsh Grad IOSH Having read though these posts I would wish to know how contributors would set their professional CV out. I have been extremely lucky in landing on my feet with my present employer keeping me busy in work now and in the future, but I feel as though I am restricted in what I can do and want to "spread my wings a bit" in the not too distant future. I would like to draft up a professional CV so in the future I can forward it to interested individuals. Does anyone have any websites they know of which can demonstrate the ideal way to set out a CV and applicable content and to what depth? Regards.
