Posted By Peter Haughey Hello all! I have a problem in that I need a job so I can finish my NVQ4 - and I need my NVQ4 so I can get a decent job!
I am a very young 62 years old, passionate about Health and Safety, with about three years experience of being the competent person/ advisor for a medium (100 employees) multi-location company (11 depots nationwide, Head Office in Sheffield).
As General Manager, I was responsible for implementing the Management System, staff training, risk assessments and audits, but didn't complete everything to get all the evidence I need for the NVQ4, so I need to get varied work to fill the gaps. I have now left the company, and am looking for a change in direction.
I got my NEBOSH certificate in 2003 (with credit). Is this enough to get a worthwhile job? Is consultancy the way to go? What about setting up as an advisor - is there a market, or is it flooded? My experience is limited to offices, workshops, a small machine shop, and sites (mostly construction, heavy industrial, or water authority sites where we supplied hired equipment).
Any advice?

Posted By Seth Hi, I am currently doing the NVQ4. Are you able to use evidence from your previous position to complete any Units? I used this method (and still am) due to a change in both employer and industry and as long as the information is no older than approx 3yrs, the BSC seem to accept this. Good luck with the job search and NVQ. Best regards
Seth

Posted By Peter Haughey Hi Seth, thanks for your response. Yes, I can use evidence up to 3 years old - I just need to fill in the gaps, and also I can't easily go back to get signatures, etc., from my old employer. How are you finding the questions? I am struggling to understand what is required of me, as they seem to be in "NVQ jargon" rather than plain English. Apparently there are guides available, but my provider says they didn't get any because "they are a rip-off". Maybe they are, but it's me that may fail for the lack of them. Did you get any? Do you know of any resources on the net which would help understand the questions? Anyway, best of luck! Pete

Posted By Glyn Atkinson I feel a Linda response coming here !
Any quality provider should have explained the requirements to you in a manner that you understand - that is partly what you are paying for at this level.
There are other threads on here where many questions are answered from those who have already completed this course of study, but basics like your request DO need to be resolved by the provider of the service.
Could I suggest that you put up a sample of what you are struggling with after you have re-consulted your provider if still stuck?

Posted By Carol Ives Hi Peter,
If you are with a City and Guilds Provider, the guidance available to the Centre is free and they should be in possession of a copy. This guidance is one way of ensuring that all Centres interpret the requirements of the standards in a common manner. There is no reason why they cannot pass on, even verbally, this information to you. Carol Ives

You can download the NVQ guidence for the standards on the OCR website - so no postage needed! However, like a lot of the NVQ stuff it is a bit long winded, better if you know where to look. Page 155 onwards!
Tell me what you are missing and I will try and help.
Can anyone here put you in a situation where you can do or assist in somework, so gain the evidence even if it was just by covering your expenses?
Post it, and you never know.
Regards
Linda
