Currently I am a student at a London University. I want to get into the Health and Safety field in the future as my career, however I do not have any experience in that area. What would be the best way of going about gaining some work experience?

Thanks,
Omar

Hi Omar

You are the type of person I was thinking about when I originaaly muted an idea to IOSH where they could institute a work experience register for people like yourself who are trying to get into the health and safety field. This would have ensure continued membership and more importantly enabled IOSH to bring fresh people to the safety arena and help them to develope their skills.

Alas this idea was first muted a couple of years ago and it would appear that the interest in the idea has sadly been lost.

Hope you are able to get the valuable expereience needed. Have you tried consultancy companies who might be prepared to let you shadow one of their consultants on a voluntary basis. That would help you get an idea on how safety works in the workplace.

Come on then fellow members who are in a position to help lets give this person a chance.

Local Authorities will also accomadate people on work experience, shadowing their inspectors on workplace inspections and visits.

Good Luck

Thankyou for your advice Robert. Would you know what consultancy companies I should go through?
I am studying a BSc (hons) degree in Air Transport Studies at City University, London.
In regards to professional qualifications in Health & Safety, is it best to go through NEBOSH?

Hi Omar

Try a search on the internet. There are quite a few. I have not used any of them before so I can't advise on which ones to try.

Hi Omar,
I allowed a student to shadow me in the workplace a few weeks ago and I think he found it very useful indeed, and I enjoyed the good feeling inside! I am too bogged down with work at the moment to repeat the exercise but come on folks, it costs nothing and I could have done with somebody similar when I was trying to break into the ranks...
