Posted By Adrian Newton Dear Forum Users, Some recent postings have suggested that registering with SHP Online results in the user receiving numerous unwanted e-mails. This is not the case and to avoid any further confusion I would like to take this opportunity to explain how we use any e-mail address information you may provide us with. We do not pass on any e-mail addresses to third parties. The only information we may send you would relate to CMP products we think you may be interested in. These types of e-mails are strictly limited to a maximum of one per week. Furthermore every e-mail we send has an opt-out option included – once you have opted out you will not receive any further e-mails from us. One thing to appreciate is that CMP produces web-sites for numerous markets – sectors we cover include construction, facilities management, building services, pharmaceuticals, fire and security to name but a few. Consequently it may be that you are receiving information as a result of registering for a product or service other than SHP Online. All CMP’s data use conforms to the Data Protection Act (1988). If you receive an e-mail you believe has come from CMP against your wishes, please write to the Data Protection Co-ordinator, CMP Information Ltd, FREEPOST LON 15637, Tonbridge, TN9 1BR, call freephone 0800 279 0357 or email dpa@cmpinformation.com. Yours sincerely, Adrian Newton - Publisher, SHP

Posted By Brett Day With all due respect, in my experience, that was not the case. I did register in the early days of SHP online and ended up with considerably more junk mail than you have conveyed in your posting, I did try the opt outs but with limited success. The problem only resolved itself by taking my registration off and by adding SHP's mail server to my spam list.
I am very reluctant given my previous experience to try and re-register.
Also whilst aware that you are a commercial organisation I am not fond of opt outs followed by indiscriminate mailings, my preferance is for an opt in to mailings clearly shown, if an opt out is to be used, then it should be clear and prominant. Whilst I cannot comment on yours at present, I have noticed that standard practice seems to be to hide the opt out at the bottom of the page in small print.
The assumption some web based services make that because I have subscribed to a service my e-mail is fair game is a poor one and incorrect.
Another option would be to be a bit more discriminating in mailings, for example only sending H&S mailings to those who have subscribed to a H&S product of yours.
If you were to change your website to an opt in, I would imagine that there will be more take up as opposed to other H&S job forums springing up as is currently happening.
Regards
Brett
