Posted By jools higham Hi all, I work in a manufacturing environment where for the past eight or so years i have been a safety representative.
I took the "IOSH Managing safely" certificate five or six years ago and last year passed the "Nebosh general certificate". I am involved with updating of the company's "risk assessment" database and also the "job safety analysis" database. Currently i am carrying out the "DSE workplace assessments" for the company, from the "identifying and prioritising users by frequency of use" stage through "devising assessment questionaire", carrying out the assessments, project managing this from start to finish and keeping updated records along the way.
I also carry out safety marshalling duties on days where the factory ceases production for maintenance purposes and for this i have to produce a report of the days findings and issues raised, health and safety problems etc. And also police the workforce in a proactive yet friendly manner;-)
So there are a few questions i could use advice on, Does this qualify me for A.N Other health and safety post or should i be looking into further qualifications?
What do i need to do to become a "Safety and Health Practitioner"?
Can I, and should i join an organisation such as IOSH?
I would very much apreciate any advice you could offer me.
Thanks in advance. Jools

Posted By Ian Mitchell Hi Jools. I am sure that eight years part time in H+S plus the post - 2001 Certificate will get you TechIOSH (next up from affiliate), so YES definitely join now! If nothing else it will put the wind up your managers! You may need to get your CV in order, polish it up a bit and leave the company as in my experience if you take a job at shop-floor level you are typecast and that is all you will be... I left after 10 years in a similar situation and have never looked back. Good luck, Ian M.

Posted By Jools.H Ian, Thanks for the up-beat advice. I'm seriously thinking about joining IOSH and i've started to get my CV updated already.
I'm not ready to leave my job just yet though, I think I still have a lot to offer my employer and I'm hoping they can see that I'm worthy of the funds required for me to achieve the NVQ. I'd like to stay with them and I'm hoping thay want that too. If they don't then there might be a hiccup which could lead to the NVQ being held up. I've just got to see what they say first.
I'll keep you posted:-) Thanks again. Jools
